Personal Statement for Pharmacy School
Having spent my childhood days with my grandparents, I would see the difficulties they went through to get medical attention. They used to take me with them when they went to visit the doctor in town. They spent long hours on road before they got there. It even got worse on our way back home since they were already worn out and sickly. I had nothing to do by then since I was too young to help them in any way. It took me a long time to realize that my grandparents really needed more serious medical attention since the medication given to them did not seem to work well with their metabolism. It was becoming useless to drive all the way from home to town to get medication that was not effective for them. Their health conditions continued to deteriorate day by day. I remember once asking the them whether we could move to the city so that they could get access to better healthcare. I wanted the best for them. In reply, they just giggled and my grandfather said, “It shall be well with us kid.” The frail smile on my grandmother was an indication of long-term suffering and desperation.
Inspired by the will to help them and other people with problems as theirs, I decided to volunteer as an assistant at Nevada Hospital during my vacation. I was later to realize that there were more people who required and actually appreciated my assistance at the facility. I was able to interact with people from all runs of life; from the young generation to the older people. I would help in describing to them how they were supposed to take their prescribed drugs. I as well answered their numerous questions they had to ask. I also helped in keeping record of those who visited the facility not forgetting to remind the older people when they were supposed to visit the medical facility next.
This experience has ever since rejuvenated a strong passion in me for working with the underserved. My in-depth knowledge in science and mathematics fueled my desire to apply for an undergraduate degree at the University of Nevada Reno. Since I have always been curious and have always wanted to come up with different solutions to diseases or advance the already-existing ones in an aim to help others, admission to the university was a pathway to achieving my dream. since then, I have done numerous pre-pharmacy courses that has in conjunction with the knowledge gained in volunteering and lad sessions, fostered my knowledge in the pharmaceutical field. My passion was fired up by Dr. Newton from Arnold Palmer Hospital whom I spent significant time with during my voluntary session. I saw him succeed in many of his projects despite the lack of up-to-date facilities.
Being together with patients have cultivated a long-term enjoyment and satisfaction in me. The experience has been invaluable. I have been with patients and friends during trying moments when they had been suffering from various conditions and I have always wanted to understand and treat all these kinds of diseases. I have as well been able to restore hope in many who seemed to have lost hope in life. I believe that my skills in IT will serve as an additional asset towards helping patients.
Having decided to specialize in this critical area, I understand the seriousness since I will be dealing with human life. It will, therefore, be my duty to make informed decisions that are well-researched and of value to the patients. I will be overly excited to learn the different functionalities of machines and processes applied in the field of pharmacy. I as well look forward to learning the many types of medicine and their interactions with the human body. My exposure will be the most critical aspect in my career development. It will enable me to work confidently towards carrying out successful patient prognostics and be of more value to the society. My admission to Palm Beach Atlantic will be a dream come true for me.
